What is Generic?

What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.


USES: For the control of the following gastrointestinal tapeworms and roundworms of dogs and puppies:
-Ascaris: Toxocara canis, Toxscaris leonine(adult and immature forms)
-Hookworms: uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum(adults)
-Whipworms: Trichuris vulpis(adults)
-Tapeworms: Echinococcus species, Taenia species, Dipylidium caninum(adults and immature forms)


Dosage: For oral administration only. Recommended dose rates are:
15mg/kg bodyweight febantel, 14.4mg/kg pyrantel pamoate and 5mg/kg praziquantel

-1 Chewable tablet per 10kg/22lbs bodyweight; the tablets can be given directly to the dog or disguised in food. No starvation is needed before or after treatment.

-For routine control adult dogs should be treated every 3 months. For routine treatment a single dose is recommended. In the event of heavy roundworm infestation a repeat dose should be given after 14 days.

Dosage Guide: Puppies and small dogs
1/2-2kg (1.1-4.4lbs) bodyweight =1/4 chewable tablet
2-5kg (4.4-11lbs) bodyweight = 1/2 chewable tablet
5-10kg (11-22lbs) bodyweight = 1 chewable tablet

Dosage Guide: Medium Dogs
10-15kg (22-33lbs) bodyweight = 1 1/2 chewable tablet
16-20kg (33-44lbs) bodyweight = 2 chewable tablet
21-25kg (44-55lbs) bodyweight = 2 1/2 chewable tablet
26-30kg (55-66lbs) bodyweight = 3 chewable tablet

-For routine treatment a single dose is recommended.

-Puppies should be treated at 2 weeks of age until 12 weeeks of age.Thereafter should be treated at 3 month intervals. It is advisable to treat the bitch at the same time as the puppies. -For the control of Toxocara, nursing bitches should be dosed 2 weeks after giving birth and every two weeks until weaning.

Use During Pregnancy and Lactation: -Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant animals for roundworms.


Composition: Each chewable tablet contains
Praziquantel USP 50mg
Pyrantel pamoate USP 144mg
Febantel BP 150mg


Praziquantel with pyrantel pamoate and febantel should not be used in animals allergic to it. Humans can contract tapeworm, hookworm and roundworm from animals so it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and not to feed rodents or uncooked meat or fish to pets. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended. This medication should not be used in pregnant animals.
