Description

Tapazole (Common Drug Name:Methimazole) is generally used in Cats to treat hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. Tapazole assists in reducing the amount of thyroid hormone produced by the body. Tapazole(Methimazole) may be used in dogs receiving cisplatin, an anti-cancer drug, in order to protect the kidneys.

Directions

Follow the dosage instructions outlined by your veterinarian. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Tapazole can be given with or without food. Blood testing should be conducted periodically to monitor liver function and for any toxic effects on blood cells.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet has a fever (temperature over 103°F), shows signs of bruising or bleeding, exhibits symptoms of an allergic reaction to the medication (signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale or yellow gums, cold limbs, or coma.) Liver failure has also been reported in rare cases.

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medication includes skin rash, itching, abnormal hair loss, upset stomach, vomiting, loss of taste, abnormal sensations, swelling, joint and muscle pain, drowsiness, dizziness, decreased white blood cells and decreased platelets.
